Hello hello hello. Call me BP (the same BP from Stack Smash). I’m here to talk about Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, a little. Well, a lot. Well… you’ll see.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars is a very fun game, but part of the fun in any crossover game is the inclusion of your favorite characters. It’s my opinion that Capcom made poor decisions in the localization of the game. I’ll just bold the next thing, since it is the basic gist of this entire post: I hate all the voices and want to hack the game to replace them all.
Think about it. Many of the Capcom characters have goldmines of quotes and a number of usable grunts, battle cries and everything else necessary. The Tatsunoko characters are from cartoons! There’s no excuse for not, at the very least, recycling voice clips from the characters’ previous appearances in English works, if such exists for each.
So what can I do about it? Nothing, really. The only help I could really provide is managing this site and suggesting voice clips to use on Viewtiful Joe and Frank West. I’m not a game hacker… But if no one tries to round up a group of people who can help this effort, nothing will happen.
So, let me get to a list of what sort of people I’m looking for.
- Technical people. The first thing we have to worry about is making it possible to replace the voice clips in the game. I know the course–it’ll start with direct replacement in the ISO, but I believe one day it’ll be possible using SD cards and Gecko OS, as you can do with Super Smash Bros. Brawl textures, models and music.
- People who know their Tatsunoko. I’ll be of no help in this area–I’m a fan of Speed Racer, but the only relevant Tatsunoko productions I’m familiar with are Tekkaman and Karas, neither of which have I seen even half of. What I mean is, we need team members who know of (and can obtain) appropriate voice clips for the characters.
- People who know their Capcom. I’ll be honest, I could only completely fill out the voice clip lists for Frank West and Viewtiful Joe. Other characters are no-brainers too, like Ryu, Chun-Li and Alex (Super Street Fighter IV). I’d be clueless as to what voice clips to use for Batsu, Zero or Morrigan though.
- Aspiring voice actors and actresses. I’m aware that a handful of the characters have never really left Japan, but why let that put a cap on how English we can make the game? Want to show off your voice? Try one of the Japanese-exclusive characters on for size.
- Sound editors capable of taking the background music out of the parts of the animes we’ll need for the voice clips. Remastering aged clips is also welcome. I know one thing, it’s gonna take a miracle for good Mega Man Volnutt clips… it sounds like they recorded the voices for Legends with the microphone under a pile of laundry…
What we don’t need… one thing: Weeaboos whining about how annoying American voice actors are. If you’re one of these people, just enjoy the huge middle finger that is the laziness of Capcom, enjoy the bastardized English in TvC, don’t tell me we’re lucky we got Ultimate All-Stars to begin with or that they ran out of time, and go away. This is for people who want a properly localized Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. If you don’t, that’s fine, but don’t waste your time telling me about it.
If you’re interested and can help with anything, I’m obviously trying to build a team here. Comment here, or send me an e-mail (wheresdezzer[at]gmail[dot]com), pop into the Stack Smash chatroom (or #cdragon, located on the same server, Esper.net), call me on my cell phone, write me a letter, meet me at the bowling alley on any Saturday morning… whatever!
